NABJ Region V Hosts Conference Offering Journalists a Chance to Retool
HOUSTON -- February 28, 2008 -- The multimedia environment has changed the way journalists do their jobs and the way journalism schools prepare students for the workforce.
The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is proud to present Transforming Careers in a Changing Industry, a daylong mini-conference, Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Texas Southern University's Tavis Smiley School of Communication in Houston.
The program will feature luncheon speaker, Roland Martin, a multimedia journalist whose career embodies this years theme. Martin, a nationally syndicated columnist and Chicago-based radio host, joined CNN last year as a contributor to several programs on-air and online. He currently provides commentary and analysis for the 2008 presidential campaigns.

The program will also feature a Student Boot Camp in a multimedia environment designed to offer the next generation of journalists an edge as they find their places in this fast-changing world of communication.
"NABJ members invest in themselves every year by joining the organization with the promise that they will receive opportunities for career advancement, said Region V Director Cindy George. We are excited to bring an efficient and effective way for our members to retool and recharge. Plus, this is an economical alternative for those unable to attend UNITY this summer.
The regional conference workshops will also help young and seasoned professionals steer their careers in a new direction.
"Now more than ever, NABJ journalists need to be ahead of the curve in their careers," said NABJ president Barbara Ciara. "Professional development opportunities are no longer optional they are necessary to survive in today's competitive media environment."

The pre-registration fee is $40 for NABJ members and $65 for non-members. Student members can register for just $25. All other students can attend for $40. Registrations processed via fax or mail will be accepted through Wednesday, March 19. Register early to save. Registration rates increase after March 19. Online registrations will be accepted through Friday, April 4. All other registrations will be accepted on-site.

An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation, with more than 4,100 members, and provides educational, career development and support to black journalists worldwide.
