NABJ Extends Condolences after Passing of UMD Dean Cleghorn
Reese Cleghorn, Dean of the University of Maryland Philip Merrill School of Journalism Dean from 1981- 2000 and responsible for clearing the way for the NABJ headquarters to move to the university campus, died at the age of 78.
In a letter of condolences to the acting dean Lee Thornton, NABJ President Barbara Ciara and Executive Director Karen Wynn Freeman commended Cleghorn’s civil rights work as a journalist and long-time support for NABJ.
“He didn’t flinch when NABJ Past President Will Sutton posed the idea of a move to the Maryland campus, instead he embraced an idea that so mellifluously tied in with his work to increase minority enrollment at the journalism school,” they wrote.
NABJ has been located on the University of Maryland campus since 1996, and will move into the state-of-the-art Knight Hall in December of 2009.
An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation, with more than 4,100 members, and provides educational, career development and support to black journalists worldwide.
