Nefertiti Williams, 1986-2006
Nefertiti Williams, news editor for The Famuan, passed away on
November 22, 2006.
She was born Jan. 27, 1986, in Sarasota, Fla. While attending
Southeast High School in Bradenton, Fla., she was president of the
Key Club and ran track.
Nefertiti came to Florida A&M University to major in public relations in
August 2004. During her time at FAMU, she became a member of
FACES Modeling Troupe, Inc.; The Famuan, the local chapter of NABJ;
the Public Relations Student Society of America; and PRodigy, a
student-run public relations company.
Bebe Moore Campbell,1950-2006
Author and journalist Bebe Moore Campbell died on November 27 at the age of 56.
She was the author of three New York Times bestsellers, Brothers and Sisters, Singing in the Comeback Choir, and What You Owe Me, which was also a Los Angeles Times "Best Book of 2001."
Her other works include Your Blues Ain't Like Mine, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and the winner of the NAACP Image Award for Literature; and Sometimes My Mommy Gets Angry, which won the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Outstanding Literature Award.
Campbell's articles have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Essence, Ebony and Black Enterprise. She was also a regular commentator for NPR's Morning Edition.
Gerald M. Boyd, 1950-2006
Gerald Boyd, former New York Times managing editor, died on November 23 at the age of 56.
During his tenure and under his leadership, the Times won Pulitzer prizes for stories on the first World Trade center bombing, poverty, Race in America and the September 11th attacks.
Boyd was very active in NABJ, spoke at the 2003 convention in Dallas and was chosen as NABJ’s Journalist of the Year in 2001.
He and his wife Robin Stone also established a $2,500 scholarship for NABJ students.
