UNITY/NABJ Student Project Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the dates of the UNITY Student Projects?
A: Accepted students must be available from July 20 - July 27, 2008.

Q: When will selected students be notified?
A: Students will be notified before May 31, 2008

Q: Will I receive notification that you have received my application?
A: Yes, all applicants will be notified via email within three weeks of the deadline date.

Q: I am not currently a member of NABJ. Can I still apply?
A: Yes, however, applicants should become members of NABJ by the application deadline of March 31, 2008 in order to be considered. Please apply online here.

Q: I’m a member of my local NABJ chapter but not the national organization. Can I still apply?
A: Yes, however, applicants should become national members of NABJ by the application deadline of March 31, 2008 in order to be considered. Please apply online here.

Q: Can high school students apply for the UNITY student projects?
A: No. High School students cannot apply for UNITY student projects; however, NABJ encourages high school students to apply for AAJA J-Camp, a multicultural journalism program for talented high school students. To apply, click here.

Q: Can I select more than one project?
A: Students are asked to rank their interest of each project on the application.

Q: Are student’s travel and lodging covered for the convention?
A: Yes, student’s convention registration, travel, lodging, and selected meals will be covered during the convention.

Q: Can I mail my information in separate packets?
A: No, please mail all the required materials in one mailing. Remember to include four copies of EACH packet with your application.

Q: Is March 31st a postmark deadline?
A: No, applications must be received in the NABJ office by March 31st.

Q: Do I have to send four copies of my work samples and recommendation letters in the packet?
A: Yes.

Q: Can I have my letters of recommendations or transcripts sent separately?
A: No

Q: What are the work sample requirements?
A: Please review the second page of the application.

Q: If I register for the UNITY convention's early bird rate and later get accepted into the program, will I receive a refund?
A: Yes, however standard credit card processing fees will apply.
