Overview

The NABJ J-Lab is an opportunity for high school students in the San Diego area to experience a hands-on journalism workshop where they will develop their reporting skills and produce a collaborative product that will be showcased at the 35th NABJ annual convention and career fair in San Diego. Students will work with journalism professionals to craft articles, video and radio stories, web content, and will learn such journalism fundamentals as reporting ethics, meeting deadlines, and news judgment. The dynamic website the students will help create will provide a place for them to direct future journalism contacts as they pursue internships or other journalism opportunities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, students must:

-Attend a high school in the San Diego metropolitan area

-Be in good academic standing

-Have a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism

-Have their parent/ legal guardian’s permission to stay on campus at Point Loma Nazarene University for the duration of the program, and to leave campus under the supervision of workshop staff to work on stories

-Be covered by health insurance

Previous experience in journalism is preferred, but not required to apply. All students, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements

To fill out the application, you will need the following information on hand:

--Your current personal information and that of your parent/ legal guardian, including addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses

--Your current GPA

--The full name and address of your high school

--An essay describing your journalism experience, if any (250 words or less)

--Three references: one academic, one professional, and one personal. For each reference, you will need to include their name, title, affiliation to you (no family members, please), phone number, and e-mail address.

-- (Optional) Essays (250 words or less each) explaining why you want to attend the workshop, what you hope to gain from it, and other information we should know about you
