NABJ Reinvention
Reinvention (rē-ən-vent shən) verb
1 : to make as if for the first time something already invented 2 : to bring into use again. 3: The updating of necessary skills to ensure that black journalists survive the disruptive changes in traditional media following layoffs, buyouts, and separations from employment.
About Reinvention
Careers in traditionally defined media - print and broadcast -are experiencing their most drastic compression in memory. The advent of the internet, mobile technology and a new generation of readers and viewers have forced changes in the established business models. Readers and viewers want faster and more specialized news accessible on multiple platforms; advertisers want to reach their customers as directly and efficiently as possible. The result is an industry that is losing money faster than it can gain from its usual sources: classified/display advertising and circulation. Media are now offering buyouts and laying off staff at record numbers. Thousands have been let go, fear is rampant, and solutions are needed. Based on an upsurge of concern expressed on the NABJ listserv, the organization moved quickly to squeeze in a planning session during the 2008 Unity of Journalists Convention.
NABJ President Barbara Ciara has asked our Board of Directors, this Reinvention Committee, and our Media Institute in particular, to make this initiative a priority.
Reinvention Committee
A working committee that will provide a year-long series of seminars – in person and online – to assist members in becoming better prepared for the disruptive changes in traditional media following layoffs, buyouts, and separations from employment.
